The Australian Society of Fish Biology (ASFB) has a strong record of acknowledging student achievements. There is also an increasing emphasis by government, industry and research institutions on encouraging high-levels of proficiency in science communication. Therefore, the Student Competition in Science Communication (SCISC) awards are aimed at creating an opportunity for early-career students to develop and demonstrate their multimedia and oral communication skills.
To apply, eligible students should create & upload a video about their research, of up to 3-minutes in length. A junior (Honours level) and a senior (Masters/PhD level) winner will be chosen via public online voting and each will receive an original piece of art (fish or invertebrate) that each Junior and Senior winner will select to have professionally painted by Dr Lindsay Gutteridge from Stick Figure Fish, valued at $650 each.
In addition, the two top ranking entrants from each Australian State/Territory and New Zealand will be eligible to compete in the final oral competition at the ASFB-OCS conference in Hobart. Finalists will compete in an “unplugged” format where they will have 2 minutes to disseminate their research to the ASFB conference audience.
Winners in junior and senior categories of the oral presentations will receive reimbursement of the cost of the Conference registration.
