Dr Barbara Cardoso is a nutritionist/dietitian and early career researcher who completed her PhD in 2014. She has been studying the role of selenium in AD since 2007, focusing in human studies and clinical trials. In her Master’s she has identified a pronounced deficiency of selenium in AD patients in a Brazilian population, and more recently she reported similar findings in an Australian population. In her PhD, she conducted a 6-month trial supplementing Brazil nuts, the most concentrated selenium food source, to mild cognitively impaired elderly and found positive changes on cognitive performance after intervention. More recently, she led studies on a clinical trial with sodium selenate supplementation to Alzheimer’s disease patients, evidencing positive effects on cognition.
