Entry for:150 Years of Discovery: Emerging Research
1. Please provide a brief summary of your video and research.
Green certified buildings have been marketed largely on the claim that they increase the productivity of occupants. It is claimed that the extra investment required to construct a Green building not only helps the environment but could also be recovered by the increased productivity of its occupants. However, there is documented evidence that the relationship between productivity and IEQ in a building that is accredited Green status is not significantly different from that of any reasonably well-designed building.
With productivity being so central to the success of organisations, my research investigates the link between the indoor environment quality of a Green Building and the productivity of occupants. To achieve this, I looked into the current methods of measuring productivity in offices and found that the current methods of measuring occupant productivity are insufficient. They do not account for actual productivity indicators of an occupant in an office environment. To solve this issue, I am developing a model that will represent true accounts of how occupants perceive their environment and how this perception influences their productivity.
I have been collecting data on different work environments with varying Green building status and their occupants. I analyse each work environment with regards to the indoor environment quality, occupant comfort and perceived productivity and activities in a typical working day. These assist in creating a holistic view on how productivity should be measured.
My research helps to understand better occupant productivity and how various factors in the work place affect it. The success of my work will lean towards the proper measurement of occupant productivity and the design of office buildings that are more responsive to occupants’ needs as well as the environment locally and globally.
