Are high performance, low cost batteries possible without using rare earth metals?

Rare-earth metals are used in everything from electric car batteries, motor magnets to wind power. There's been alot of talk around the limited supply, environmental problems and past price hikes presenting a real risk that hinders the growth of renewable energy technologies. Is this true? Are their alternatives to rare-earths for batteries and renewable energy? Thanks
